Saturday Shopping List // Halloween Detox

Happy Saturday Sunday!  Yesterday we had a day full of Halloween shenanigans and a little girl who didn’t nap, so the shopping list was put on the back burner.  Sorry about that.

This week I picked a slew of crazy healthy recipes to help you detox from your Halloween weekend.  Yesterday, after eating 4-5 pieces of candy (which I normally never eat) I started feeling grouchy and depressed.  It was convincing to me that all the negative hubbub about sugar lately is legit.  I hope this menu helps you to come down from your sugar buzz. And then on Friday, to celebrate a healthy week, some hearty, creamy pasta (with some earthy, roasted beets in there to continue the healthy vibe).

There’s a creamy squash soup, hearty autumn salad, and eggplant meatballs. So in other words, a healthy menu with no compromise of deliciousness and comfort.

This is a dreamy, green-less salad by Pinch of Yum is screaming everything autumn.  Add a can of chickpeas to add some heartiness.  (GF + V) RECIPE

Roasted brussel sprouts are one of my favorites.  This recipe by Naturally Ella is going to fulfill my brussel sprout dreams.  If you’re looking for a creamier polenta, add 4 oz of goat cheese. (GF + sub vegan butter alternative) RECIPE

It’s all the decadence of risotto and yet it’s not.  This creative recipe from Sanisbury Magazine is loaded with tender greens and mushrooms galore.  (GF + sub butter for coconut oil + vegan parm or nutritional yeast for parmesan, if vegan) RECIPE

By spicy, it means full of spices not necessary “hot” per se.  Cookie + Kate makes this “Chorizo” inspired soup from the cookbook “The Year of Cozy” by Adrianna Adarme. Super simple and squash has so much nutritional value.  (GF + V) RECIPE

I literally cannot wait until Wednesday so that I can eat these amazing “meat”balls by The First Mess.  Satiable and hearty but seriously healthy. Can you say kale pesto? (sub GF bread if GF + V) RECIPE

I am obsessed with tahini dressings.  They make salad so creamy and earthy.  I can’t wait to try Minimalist Baker’s version with Kale and some butter beans. (Use GF croutons if GF + already V) RECIPE

The thing about Half Baked Harvest recipes, is that they are extremely creative and interesting.  Yes, this is a pasta dish on a detox menu.  Cut yourself some slack.  And come on, there are beets in here. (if you’re GF use GF pasta or maybe stir the ingredients into a risotto. If vegan, skip the manchengo or substitute with vegan parm.  Use 1/2 cup cashew cream mixed with salt, pepper, and 2 Tbsp of nutritional yeast to substitute the brie) RECIPE

Saturday Shopping List // FALL (now with vegan + GF options)

Friends.  I have decided to add a new feature to this Saturday Shopping List series.  Many of the recipes I pick out are gluten free, vegan, or both but not all of them.  So, to cater to those of you who take it a step further, I am adding vegan and gluten free alterations to all recipes as a note under each recipe for every post.  This will also be reflected in the shopping list.  I hope this can make this experience a little more inclusive.

I have been angry about fall, but this week the romance of autumn has swept me up.  Although I’m not excited about the cold, the warm days with crisp mornings and amazing light pouring through a kaleidoscope of changing leaves is just plain hard not to love.  So here you have a weeks worth of dinners, all singing autumn’s praises.  I hope this makes your weeks a little more warm and comforting.

Another delicious looking recipe by Minimalist Baker.  We love pad thai and can’t wait to try this comforting variation.  (Use tamari for soy sauce if you are gluten free.  Already vegan) RECIPE

I love how I know all recipes from My New Roots are crazy healthy.  Full of color and fresh vegetables, this salad gives all the comfort you need for a cool fall day as well as the vitamins to deal with less sunshine. (use gluten free bread for croutons if GF.  Use coconut oil for ghee if vegan) RECIPE

Check out this clean and fresh blog, Brooklyn Supper.  I don’t usually love wild rice but this recipe looks so divine.  (already GF. Sub coconut oil for butter and vegan creamer or cashew cream for half & half if vegan) RECIPE

There is something magical about the combination of sweet potatoes, black beans and avocados.  And the green rice Cookie + Kate came up with looks yummy! (already vegan & gluten free!- unless you throw some feta on top) RECIPE

A beautifully fragrant and comforting lentil dish by Naturally Ella.  If you don’t have a mortar and pestle or spice grinder, you can always buy the ground versions of the spices and just toast lightly in a pan.  Serve with your favorite grain — I put on the shopping list rice or quinoa. (already vegan & GF!) RECIPE

This recipe by Green Kitchen Stories looks crazy beautiful.  Like, maybe you’ll want to invite friends over on Thursday night. If you can’t find romesco broccoli you can also use cauliflower or regular broccoli as a substitute. (already vegan & gluten free!) RECIPE

You will find a lot of these pureed soups on here because they are serious the easiest and fastest meals to make.  And to top it off this one by Feasting at Home is rich & aromatic.  (substitute coconut sugar or maple syrup for brown sugar if vegan & already GF!) RECIPE

Saturday Shopping List + Update

Yes.  Saturday Shopping Lists have been mostly the only posts going up on Keeping Willow lately.  Trust me, it was not my intention to turn this blog into a shopping service when I started this series, but as a supplement to already occuring material.  Such is life sometimes. I promise there will be more variety in the future, but for now here is a little update on life at present.

Here in Toronto, education starts early.  Willow started going to preschool about 3 weeks ago, 2 days a week, from 9-3.  She is doing remarkably well.  I promised myself I wouldn’t get all upset when she started.  I broke my promise.

I have been in a constant state of adjustment.  Although I’ve been at a new job for the past 3 months, I am still trying to find new ways to fit my old routines into a my new schedule. When can I fit in a workout, make a new batch of kombucha, write a blog post? It’s been a challenge  Maybe a future blog post?

Jazz just started a new year of grad school as well as a new job.  His increasing interest in the coffee industry has lead him to a job at the best coffee shop in Toronto.  I can’t wait to reap the benefits of this change.

I love this recipe by My Darling Lemon Thyme.  The ginger and squash combination is genius.  I added tempeh to the mix for a little extra protein (an option I put on the shopping list).  RECIPE

Saturday Shopping List

You guys it’s fall.  I might be 95% in protest of it, but there is 5% of me that is very excited.  I mean warm fall days, apple cider, pumpkin doughnuts, chai, cinnamon and nutmeg aromas pretty much everywhere… it’s kind of great.  It would be much better if it meant that winter was not close at hand.  And while normally, I am all “Winter is coming!” and “embrace the cold” this year I am not.  This year I wish I lived in Arizona.  But right now, pumpkin and squash and everything nice.

This week is Thanksgiving up here in Canada so there are lots of pumpkin and squash inspired recipes.  Maybe not traditional Thanksgiving fare, even for a vegetarian, but absolutely fall inspired.

Pinch of Yum always puts out amazing recipes, and I can’t wait to try this stir fry recipe.  Since asparagus is out of season, try substituting broccoli or eggplant. RECIPE

I love corn chowder but this thai inspired version by Half Baked Harvest looks irresistible. Ignore the shrimp and try substituting thin slices or cauliflower. RECIPE

Pumpkin Chili?  Ok.  This fall inspired lentil chili by Nourish Atelier has the flavor or a curry but can stand on it’s own without rice.  So rich and creamy.  The instructions are a little hard to follow, so forgive me for that. RECIPE

This is such a creative twist on traditional sushi (and way less work intensive) by Cookie + Kate.  It’s super delicious and fills every sushi craving. RECIPE

Saturday Shopping List // Keeping Willow

This recipe from Sweedish blog Made by Mary looks divine (don’t worry, there’s a translation into English).  I did find one translation typo.  It says to use 10.5 cups of red wine.  It should be just 1/2 a cup, although you may need that much to share a glass with friends. RECIPE

Another simple and delicious recipe by Cookie + Kate.  You can’t go wrong with good old tortilla soup.  If you don’t want to make tortilla strips, you can always just buy tortilla chips.  Also, if you can’t tolerate heat, you can substitute a green bell pepper for chile or poblano. RECIPE

I love Naturally Ella.  This recipe is easy and fast.  You can use regular broccoli if you can’t find broccolini.  Eat with a simple arugula salad tossed with a little oil and vinegar (I included the arugula in the shopping list so if you don’t want it, just omit). RECIPE

The name of this blog is Connoisseurus  Veg.  I kind of love that.  These are easy, simple and vegan served with a maple tahini sauce.  Make them gluten free by using GF breadcrumbs and tamari for soy sauce.  If you’re vegetarian, I recommend adding some feta. RECIPE

I am picky about my polenta.  I like it creamy, not stiff and gummy.  This recipe by Pinch of Yum is my favorite.  Serve with a poached egg! RECIPE

This is my number 1, all time favorite stir fry recipe.  The sauce is delcious but Post Punk Kitchen takes it over the edge by adding avocado, basil and some roasted salted peanuts. Also, this method of stir frying I have adapted to all kinds of recipes. RECIPE
